Michael Schumacher who suffered from serious injuries following a skiing accident on Sunday remains in a state of induced coma and in a critical condition following the surgery performed on him earlier today. Schumacher who has reached the peak of being a professional skier was on a private holiday with his family when an outing resulted him straying away from the skiing course, which led to him falling and hitting his head on a rock. Schumacher was wearing a helmet during the incident, however he sustained serious injuries and impact was certain on the right side of the head. He has been reported to suffer from intracranial (within the skull) hematoma (subdural haematoma), Cerebral Edema (Swelling of the brain) and bi-lateral lesion.
Latest reports indicates that an operation has been carried out on the former F1 race car driver to relieve pressure in his head and limit damage to his brain. As of now, doctor’s does not foresee second operation but have not confirmed if Schumacher’s condition would get any better. His condition remains very serious and at this point of time no certain outcome can be established. Doctor’s are observing him on hour-to-hour basis as he is placed under local anaesthesia to minimise stimulus and remains in the ICU under medically induced coma.
Michael Schumacher made his debut in the Formula One Grand Prix in 1991 at the age of 22 racing with Benetton where he drove home his maidenhood title as Formula One Champion in 1994; a victory he repeated in 1995 under the same team. Schumacher moved on to Ferrari in the 1996 season where he broke F1’s record with a total of 7 championships to his name, five of which he won with Ferrari ultimately placing him as world’s number one Formula One champion.
Schumacher began skiing after he joined Ferrari as he constantly participated in an organised outing with the team up to the level of becoming a professional skier whereby even after his retirement in 2012, skiing has remained a big part of his life. Schumacher’s family are currently with him at the hospital while fans around the world are flocking social medias with encouraging words and praying for his recovery.
