Appearing for the first time after 6 years of absence, fans all over the world were left excited as one of the most influential teutonic duo of the last decade announced a come back in 2013 through the collective mass of musical rhapsody infused in their latest album ‘Random Access Memories’. The once unfinished story of Daft Punk can now have a perfect fairy-tale ending as their comeback in the mid of 2013 marks another creative high in their career as they won record of the year for ‘Get Lucky’ and album of the year for ‘Random Access Memories’ at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards Sunday night. Daft Punk has more reasons to celebrate than the fact that they’ve successfully grabbed the most prestigious award of the year but also made history by becoming the first electronic act whose production won the the album of the year since the inception of the award back in 2004. The duo broke a staggering record of 35 years since ‘Saturday Night Fever’ crowning recognition back in 1979.
The duo were naturally silent in their signature trait of futuristic helmet and suit so Paul Williams who contributed on the songwriting and vocal parts on songs such as ‘Evergreen and We’ve Only Just Begun accepted the trophy stating that he was in the middle of sobering up from years of substance abuse until two robots approached him and asked him to make an album.
Pharrel Williams accepted the award for record of the year for the song ‘Get Lucky’, in which he contributed on vocals.
Daft Punk has pretty much been the highlight of our week and has been since the news hit the stand that they were officially back with a brand new EP on tow. Since becoming Internet conquering heroes after the news became official with the first sign of update on their Facebook fan page, there has been a steady flow of news being released about the French Teutonic duo.
From their shift to a new record label to advertisement popping up everywhere, every detail of their return has harbored a massive media interest. We now have the title of the album confirmed at ‘Random Access Memories’ and the EP is due to be out in mid-May. To keep the fans on the toe, Coachella had the privilege to showcase Daft Punk’s new music through the trailer for ‘Get Lucky’ featuring Pharrell and Nile Rogers. The music video is the longest giveaways they have released so far following the snippet that was aired on SNL last month. Bit by bit Daft Punk are giving away pieces of puzzle to complete the enigma of their return and through the video we now know that Pharrell is one more name that adds the grit into the new upcoming EP.
Every kid of the new generation of ravers knows Daft Punk, and say if they don’t, then you can easily take it as a blasphemy and make it real personal. Though the French electronic music maestros’ mobility in the ever growing scene remained vague shortly after their performance in Sidney Showground in 2007, the recognition and approbation from fans and peers remained strong throughout the years. 2008 saw no tour or releases from the duo until they made a surprise appearance alongside Kanye West at the 50th Grammy Awards to perform a reworked version of ‘Stronger’. That was the only public appearance made my the EDM moguls in that year followed by a surprise guest appearance in 2010 at the encore of Phoenix’s, New York City.
Apart from that, Daft Punk remained dutifully under hiatus as more and more rumours started to take hold of the EDM industry about their upcoming tracks, albums, Disney projects and more. After 6 full years of absence, recently reports has submerge that Daft Punk has made a move from EMI to Sony and will be back in the game this summer contrary to the reports saying that they will be making an appearance at Coachella.
While we are literally exhausted with there ongoing rumours and having contraction every 5 minutes trying to decide if Daft Punk will ever return to the scene with a new production or even a ‘final tour’, we all know that it won’t be on the cards since the dudes are more clandestine than dramatic. As of now Daft Punk has left us clinging on hopes over their anticipated return and up till 2013, devoted fans are still keeping their my space account just so they won’t miss anything.
Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo, 39 and Thomas Bangalter, 38 who made Daft Punk rise in the EDM industry in the late 90s saw a shift in the electronic music era. While their belated band Darlin’ met its final frontier, they found their rebound with Daft Punk. As their empire was being build, they reach the peak of their career having every rave hungry teenager embracing a new founded religion which was Daft Punk. Musically, many top notch acts of today including the controversial Deadmau5 has listed Daft Punk as one of his influences.
All we can hope right now is that this news would soon be confirmed by Sony so that these contraction can stop or else we can calmly sit back and play Adele’s ‘Rumour Has It’ till someone confirms the story. Our only fear is, the music industry has change in bulks since the French sensation made an exit and would they be able to keep up with the game and match the standards of current production? While we are as skeptical as anyone out there, we have a theory fo our own that Daft Punk never truly left and insted assumed another identity and have been making music ever since. Now all we have to do is look for two French dudes in their late 30s and try to solve the mystery. Or perhaps the robot suit became to heavy for 2 dudes who are at the perk of being 40. It’s better than waiting for the rumours to be confirmed, right?
