Seven-time Formula One world champion, Michael Schumacher was air lifted to the hospital on Sunday following a skiing accident in the Alps. Schumacher, 44 who announced his final retirement from the Formula One sports last year, was skiing off-piste (trackless area away from regular ski runs) with his son when the accident occurred. Schumacher who was conscious at the time of the accident was wearing a helmet when he fell and hit his head against a rock. He was immediately transported to the nearby valley town of Moutiers.
An earlier report stated that he suffered serious head injuries but it was not life threatening. However he was later transferred to University Hospital Centre of Grenoble and later reported to be in critical condition. The Hospital released an official statement indicating that Schumacher was in coma at the time of arrival and required immediate brain surgery.
Schumacher who is due to turn 45 in just few days (Jan, 3) started skiing after he joined Ferrari and had become excellent in the sport. Schumacher made his debut in Formula 1 in 1991 driving with Benetton. He won two championship with Benetton in 1994 and in 1995 before moving to Ferrari in 1996 where he won another 5 championships making it a total of 7 Formula 1 titles before announcing his resignation from the sports in 2006.
Schumacher returned to the track once again in 2010 with the revival of Mercedes but struggled to repeat his earlier victories until his second and final resignation announcement which was made in 2012. Schumacher currently reigns as the number one Formula 1 driver in the world followed by Alain Prost at number 2 and Ayrton Senna at number 3.
The hospital has not given anymore updates following the initial announcement about the Formula 1 champion’s condition and has asked for everyone’s patience as they are unable to provide continuous report on his condition.
